Hearth Tax for Kingston Bagpuize 1662

The Hearth tax was a tax, levied on each hearth from 19th May 1662 until 1689. It was calculated based on the number of hearths, or fireplaces, within a municipal area. They are an important source as they provide an indication of the size of property being assessed. The tax paid by the occupier was assessed as 2 shillings on each heath, collected in two instalments at Lady Day and Michaelmas.
